As a therapist, it is always my first instinct to take the lead from my client. You are the expert when it comes to your life experiences. I am here to journey with you, to provide new skills, and to encourage you on your path to new emotional growth. Because everyone is unique, every approach to treatment is different. We all have our own struggles and achievements and identifying what those are for you can point our therapeutic journey on the path toward success.
I start with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) because it has been shown to be highly effective in treating a broad scope of symptoms while allowing clients and therapists to tailor treatment to the needs of the individual. I also use acceptance and commitment therapy, which can increase psychological and emotional flexibility while introducing strategies focused on acceptance and mindfulness. The ultimate goal is to bring about positive behavioral and emotional change, to bring out the version of yourself best equipped to deal with the challenges of life.
An enhancement of CBT that I utilize is TEAM-CBT, which is a framework of testing, empathy, assessment of resistance, and methods used to enhance the effectiveness of all utilized therapeutic approaches. I look forward to working with you to determine which approach will be the most impactful for you. I have also been trained in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and Gottman Method Couples Counseling (Levels one and two).
Your battles inspired me- not the obvious material battles but those that were fought and won behind your forehead.” James Joyce
One of the most important parts of our mission at Building Skills, LLC is to provide excellent counseling services at a reasonable cost to our clients. As such, we contract with the majority of insurers and many Employee Assistance Programs to make your treatment accessible, regardless of your current financial situation.
Many insurers will not add associate level clinicians to their networks. Associate level clinicians in Washington state have completed their Master's Degree and other educational requirements like internship. However, they are in the first 2-5 years of their therapy practice and work under the supervision of a provider who meets the state requirements to supervise the early years of counseling practice (similar to a "resident" doctor working at a hospital). Meara will be eligible to work under a few of our contracts and we are in the process of requesting that she be added to our roster for those insurers. This process will take several months. We can also provide you with a superbill to allow you to seek reimbursement from your insurance company independently, but we cannot tell you if your insurance policy allows for that out of network reimbursement.
In the meantime, services with Meara will be cash pay only. We are offering this service with Meara at our sliding fee rate of $70 per session, regardless of our usual income eligibility requirement. We have made this decision because of our commitment to making therapy affordable, and the huge demand for mental health services at this time. With the shortage of mental health professionals and the stories I hear every day about how difficult it has become to find a therapist, we wanted to help train good people to full licensure and make sure we can continue to grow with the needs of our community.
